Background
G-protein-coupled receptor proteins (GPCRs) are a huge protein family in mammals that mediate the physiological action of many neurotransmitters and neuromodulaters.
GPCR levels on the cell surface can be regulated by endocytosis and subsequent recycling or degradation of the internalized proteins. The G-protein-coupled receptor-associated sorting proteins GASP 1 and 2 play major roles in the postendocytic sorting of GPCRs to the degradative pathway.
