Background

KCC 2 is a potassium-chloride co-transporter that is exclusively expressed in neurons of the central nervous system. The electroneutral potassium-chloride co-transport occurs under isotonic conditions, but is activated 20-fold by cell swelling. KCC 2 is important for Cl^- homeostasis in neurons.
Two isoforms, KCC 2a and KCC 2b, have been described, so far.
