Background

Ubiquitination of proteins is a dynamic and reversible process that regulates protein stability and turnover in eukaryotes. The removal of ubiquitin is carried out by deubiquitinating (DUB) enzymes which can be subdivided into ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolases (UCHs) and ubiquitin-specific proteases (USPs). The ubiquitin thioesterase Otubain 1 belongs to the latter group of proteins.
