Background

The integral membrane protein CAML (Calcium signal-modulating cyclophilin ligand) is highly conserved throughout species and constitutively expressed in immune cells and various cells of the nervous system. Besides its link to calcium signaling, it has recently been shown that CAML reconstitutes together with WRB the TRC40 receptor at the endoplasmic reticulum, which mediates post-translationally insertion of tail-anchored membrane proteins into the ER.
